Ex-Best Friends

Jacksonville, this city is the home of many amazing skatepunk acts (Hatrick, Stalemate, Inspection 12, Whaleface and many more). Ex-Best Friends started there in 1999 at that time when new school technical punk was very popular in USA. They had that kind of sound and it was very good! They gained popularity very fast and shared the stage with big names like Yellowcard, Good Riddance, Slick Shoes and many more! After many members changes, they disbanded. Some years later they relocated to Los Angeles, California and played there for a while. Now they are back to Jacksonville with a new lineup and are writing a new EP that is expected for late 2011!

Hey Jackson

Hey Jackson was a Christian Punk band from Madison, Wisconsin in USA. They released a 8-song album in 2004 and stopped two years later. That album is a lot more skatepunk than the latest songs they recorded which are more hardcore and metal oriented. Two members joined A Gnarly Swell, which was another good skatepunk band, but they also changed their style now.

Undiscussed

I really don't have much infos about this band. All I know is that they were 5 guys from around Montreal, Quebec that started around 2002. They became slower later and added some metal influences. I don't think that they're still together.. I'll continue searching for more infos about them and post it if I find.

Under Authority

Under Authority is a Canadian melodic skatepunk band that started in 1998 in the city of St. John's, Newfoundland. I'm not sure if they are still active, as there haven't been any updates since the release of their last album in 2008. They play good quality music, original and catchy songs. A nice discovery from the Eastern part of Canada that is hiding some gems!

Pigsty

This is Pigsty, a band from San Pedro, California! They played from 1994 to 2002. I had some songs from mp3.com since a long time but all the rest was a total mistery to me, until Bob Archer, one of the members, put up a facebook page about the band! Thanks to him! If you don't know them, give it a listen they were incredibly good!!

Herman Flatwanker Band

Herman Flatwanker Band started in 1995 under the name Barf Bags. After a couple of shows and months of practice they changed their name for Überfrierende Nässe. Although their band name was in german, almost every songs they were playing were in english. I don't know how it sounded, but the guys were influenced a lot by Lagwagon so I guess it was pretty good. They released 3 albums under that name and changed again for Herman Flatwanker Band in 1999. Then, they played for 2 years under that name and and changed again, for the third and last time, their name for The Hermans. They are still together, with some members changes but they are not playing skatepunk anymore since a couple of years... I could have started this post as The Hermans, but I think the most skatepunk music they did was when they were called Herman Flatwanker Band.

Gervai's Attack

Gervai's Attack was a punkrock / skatepunk band from Lévis, Quebec that started in 1996. At the beginning they were playing more pop/punk but many members wanted to play more aggressive and fast punk. That's why in 1999, after many lineup changes they finally started to write fast punkrock songs. They played many shows and shared the stage with many other skatepunk bands from Quebec like Bad Cherries, From Grass To Cheese, Useed and many more. Unfortunately all the songs they released are in very poor sound quality and most of them are not skatepunk! The only few good songs they recorded were supposed to be released on an 5-song EP in 2001 but the band disbanded the same year and it never saw the light. Some members later started Leitmotiv, a rock band

Seeling

I remember when I first heard this band it was in 2000 and at first listen I didnt like them that much.. But some days later I had some of their melodies in the head and then I was listening to their CD at least 5 times a day!! No need to say that Unnatural is one of my favorite album ever!
About some history, Seeling started in summer of 1995 at a time when Bodyjar, Frenzal Rhomb, and One Inch Punch were some of the most popular bands in Australia. Seeling were very influenced by those bands and that's why they started to play a fast kind of punk with some pop and rock influences which reminds Bodyjar and Game Over. What made that band so good is their well-balanced songs supperted by fast drummer and amazing vocals. They had the chance to play with big names from USA like Unwritten Law and Blink 182, as well as the other big bands from Australia. In early 2000 the band stopped... and now remains only in memories..

Bowser

First, lets clarify some things about Bowser. This band started somewhere around 1995 and have recorded 3 tapes and 4 CDs. The only record to have been released on a label is the Self-Titled under Monster/Reprisal Records. All the rest was DIY stuff, CD-Rs, self-made demotapes, etc and some of them were never released.

As far as I know, the following was physically released : Opinion (tape), Bowser vs. NOFX (tape), One Happy Family CD, Bowser CD-R and Bowser CD on Monster/Reprisal Records. The Bowser CD was first released on Monster Records in 2001, then re-released on Reprisal Records in 2002. Also, many people know the Bowser CD-R (the 4-tracks one) under the name Skate And Die, but this title never existed. You can see a pic of the CD-R : HERE! So, 3 of the 4 CDs were released, what leave I Hate The Mainstream Shit only a 3-song demo that were sent to mp3.com for download-only.

Now about the tapes... even if it was their first recording, Manga Girl was stuffed with amazing songs, but it was never released because right after the recording some members left the band. They reformed some months later and started to record again with a new vocalist. 2 of the 5 songs on Manga Girl were re-recorded, and some physical Opinion demo-tape copies were successfully made. One thing to know about Manga Girl is that it was a 5-song tape and it has nothing to do with that fake 8-song that is circulating over the web, this is not even the same singer... As for the Bowser vs. NOFX, this is more a joke than a real recording. It sound really shitty and was recorded in a couple of hours, and they play 5 NOFX songs and only 2 of their own songs. Only 7 copies or so were made.

Bowser was playing a fast and very melodic punk similar to Swedish legends like Millencolin, Adhesive and Satanic Surfers, but without copying any of them. They had their own sound and it was fast, melodic, catchy, seriously some of the best skatepunk songs ever made in my opinion. There has been many lineup changes in the band. The only member to have been there from the beginning to the end is Tony Graf. They disbanded in 2003 and some members started When We Fall, an hardcore band. Håkan Ljunggren now play skatepunk in Steve And The Alcoholics

Pummel

I bought their album last week and I wasnt sure if it would be as good as the few songs I had on my PC. The CD has 3 fast tracks out of 9 but those 3 tracks are very good, pure Californian skatepunk like in the 90's!! The other tracks are good too but they are more slow or midtempo alternative rock / punk with some jazz or metal influences. A very diverse album overall, but every song has something that make you want to listen again! If you search for Pummel on google you may find another band with the same name but they were from Arizona. The one I'm writing about is from Sacramento, California. They never got big as there was probably not enough place for them on the scene. But, the work they did was very good!!

Screwloose

Screwloose was a fast and technical punk band from New South Wales, Australia that played from 2003 to 2005. During that time, they released 2 small 4-song demos. They were mainly influenced by bands like Belvedere, Choke, Deville etc. but they also had some emo and hardcore influences. They mixed all  of this together and it gave a very good result without losing any speed!!

Overthrow

Overthrow was a five-piece skatepunk band from the area of Portneuf, Quebec that started in 1998. During their short time of existence, they had the chance to play with BigWig, Douglas and many other amazing skatepunk acts. They also recorded a song for one of the best punk compilation to have been released in Quebec : This Scene Has Been Built Together on Hard Fist Records.  Overthrow were strongly influenced by the Swedish bands like Pridebowl, Adhesive, etc. I dont know exactly when the band disbanded but I think its somewhere around 2000. In 2006, the 2 brothers Sebastien Côté (bass) and Benoît Côté (drums)  joined the band Crane where they played for a while. Overthrow unfortunately never released anything else than one compilation songs. (but WHAT a song!!) They also recorded 6 songs live in a studio but they were never released.  ..

Braskey

I dont know if this band is still alive, I havent heard any news from them since a couple of years. On their Myspace they say they are in a indeffinate hiatus, its like that since 2006... Too bad because they released what is according to me one of the best post-2004 album from USA. They are highly influenced by A Wilhelm Scream, but they also have a lot of influences from old skatepunk bands like Bigwig, Strung Out, Sick Shift which give a dynamic and particular aspect to their songs. I recommand on their myspace the song "Forgive Me Father", it's simply amazing!! If you like their music you should go on Interpunk buy their album "Only You Can Save Yourself" theres only a few copy left and I think it will become very hard to find in the future.

Argyle

Argyle was a fast and technical skatepunk band from California that started in 2000. They played for a few years and disbanded, without releasing any album/demo. They recorded a couple of songs, some of them were put as a digital release, "Let's Get Political" on mp3.com. I'm sure that if this band would have continued to play, it would have been a blast!! The latest songs they recorded were incredibly good! Doug, one of the members, told me recently that a new project is in the work after 10 years and they will keep that fast skatepunk sound!!! Can't wait to hear that!

Shrovetide

An old friend of mine sent me some of their songs many years ago. He told me he was gifted an old demotape from a guy that had it somewhere lost in his house... There must be so many demotapes that are thrown to garbage or totally forgotten in the dust... Fortunately Shrovetide made a myspace account where they put most of their songs for listen! This band also appeared on an old compilation released by Ceasar Records entitled Kabuki Knights. This comp also featured tracks from Facing Down, Venerea, Scarecrow, Propagandhi, Randy and more. Shrovetide played tight skatepunk with good melodies... good stuff!!! They unfortunately only existed for a while... and released only a demo.

Quest Kon Fuse

Quest Kon Fuse, wow that was the good days!! These 5 guys from Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada started in 1996. This was the "skatepunk explosion" here in Quebec and a lot of bands were emerging. QKF were not only very good musicians but they were intense guys with amazing live performances. QKF were there to kick some ass and they delivered to their fans what they expected! Their songs are fast from the beginning to the end, with some Metal influences. Too bad they only released a small demotape... I recently got infos that they would maybe record some new stuff. Go check their myspace !! I recommend the song Kaiser.

The Preshure Point

The Preshure Point was a Skatepunk band from Alberta that started in 1997, released a couple of albums/EPs and disbanded in 2003. Why I put them on this blog is because not only they put out an amazing skatepunk album "A Fiction Better Than Reality", but especially because it was one of Graham Churchill (the famous Belvedere/This Is A Standoff drummer) first band. They changed their style and became slower on their last release. If you want to know how they sounded when they played fast you should check the song It Doesnt Compare on their myspace account.

Mr. Yuck

Lets start the blog with this band from Houston, Texas that played from 1994 to the beginning of the 2000's. As far as I know, they only released one CD entitled Warm Up in 2000. The band disbanded soon after the release and some members started other bands in different music styles. They played fast and technical skatepunk with amazing melodies... They were on a small label A-Attack Records with another band called Kilroy I think they were playing similar style as Mr. Yuck but I never had the chance to hear them...

Introduction to this blog!!

So hi and welcome on my blog! First, I'd like to say that I'm a french guy living in Quebec, Canada, but I will try to write everything in english so all my friends over the world can read it. But sorry if sometimes its not the good english I'll try my best but I'm not so good ... The purpose of this blog is only to write about old or alive skatepunk bands and stuff. I will probably put some albums/mp3s for download too but I want more to focus on putting pictures, videos, and other informations on obscur bands all around the world.. These days skatepunk is not the big trend but I have tons of good memories of amazing bands that were playing in the 90's and early 2000's and I want to share with you so keep checking this blog!
